I recall a day from a few years ago when our realtor discussed the importance of a house’s foundation. He pointed out that, much like in life, having a solid foundation is essential, and I wholeheartedly agreed. Over the years, while exploring homes, we would examine everything only to discover at the end of the tour that the foundation was faulty and it was always a bummer to me if I really liked the house.
After that, my husband would focus on the exterior foundation first, and we’ve walked away without even entering before. If we do venture inside, he inspects the basement right away, and we quickly exit if it’s not sturdy because I don’t want to see the rest and be disappointed.
The childhood story of the Three Little Pigs reminds me of the wolf that comes to each home. The first one was made of straw, the next house was made of sticks, and the last one was made of bricks. The wolf, with its cunning nature, approached each house with a determined huff and puff, eager to test the strength of the pigs’ choices.

The wolf arrives, causing both the straw and stick houses to collapse. This wolf can easily symbolize challenges, adversities, illness, death, and other hardships. However, it cannot bring down the brick house since it stands on a solid foundation—a firm rock. This foundation allows us to find joy, even amid life’s storms. Conversely, if someone builds their foundation on unstable elements like jobs, cars, wealth, or popularity, it won’t withstand the test because eventually it will all fall down. Yet, if that foundation is built on rock, it will endure through any storm.
I find myself wondering whether the author was drawing a connection to the necessity of having Christ as our steadfast foundation. This story acts as a reminder of the importance that genuine security comes from establishing a firm foundation in our lives. I need to ask myself daily: Is Jesus Christ indeed the cornerstone of that foundation?
