“What are your credentials?” A woman who was inquiring about my qualifications to assist her. I’ve often encountered the question, “How old are you?” because people generally prefer to engage with those who have more life experience. I couldn’t help but chuckle at her question, but it was indeed a valid one. My initial reaction was to think of my husband, who has six credentials following his name, and I realized that I don’t have any such titles behind my name.
I began with my next thought and told her, “I am a child of God.” I then shared that I have been married for 35 years and have raised children who are now adults. Throughout my life, I have gained valuable insights and continue to learn. I shared with her my love for Jesus and for others stating that is why I was there. She appeared satisfied with my response, even though I anticipated that she might prefer to speak with someone more qualified. Our conversation continued, and she left feeling a significant weight lifted, grateful to have connected with someone who understood her journey.
This reminds me when years ago one of my blessings was wanting to make a gift for his sister and together we made a driver’s license looking card with her picture and it said “Ambassador of Christ”. She loved that gift and cherished it; probably sitting in her keepsake somewhere. As followers of Christ, we are all called to be Ambassadors for Him, sharing His love and compassion with those around us.
“God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called.”
Over the years, I’ve volunteered in various community services, which has given me practical experience in listening, understanding, and empathizing with others. My journey has taught me that while formal qualifications are important, sometimes the most meaningful connections are built on empathy, kindness, and genuine care. So, while I might not have a list of traditional credentials, I bring my heart and my faith to all that I do, committed to making a positive difference in the lives of those I encounter while pointing them to Jesus.
