Find Your Flow: Creative and Fun Activities

March 12, 2026

What activities can I lose myself in? There are actually quite a few when I think of it.

WRITING
It’s no secret I can definitely get lost in writing, as my journals and musings have hinted. I think it all began in junior high when the writing bug bit me. My heart belongs to English and grammar corrections, thanks to an incredible teacher who cheered me on. Her name escapes me, but I’ll never forget the Harrison Ford poster size on her classroom wall—definitely not the usual decor for nurturing young minds, but hey, we all have our things!

READING
Diving into a novel used to whisk me away, reading until the book was done, but now, those longer, fictional books are a no-go! These days, I’m all about non-fiction, where I can hit pause after a chapter with zero cliffhangers. Plus, I love reading other author’s short stories.

WORKOUT
It’s a spicy love-hate tango! Picture this: I’m sweating up a storm in a 90-plus degree Fahrenheit room, doing sculpt and barre like it’s nobody’s business. It feels amazing to take care of your body and when there’s great music, that helps a lot too! Sweating under the sun feels like a sticky mess, but intentionally sweating for a purpose, I defintely embrace the drench-fest. It helps to wear moisture-wicking clothes of course. And, I always have workout buddies I meet there and we love to sweat together.

VIDEOGRAPHY AND PHOTOGRAPHY
I have loved doing this over the years, and it can definitely be hours later before I am done. I love designing things for people as well. It is really just another thing to do that is very therapeutic. I have had people think I went to college for a design degree, but, no, I have spent hours teaching myself. I am sure there is a lot more I could learn.

PAINTING
Once I decide to start painting, I feel I cannot stop. I do nothing grand but I have been known to spending hours simply splashing colors around the canvas. No idea how time always flies, but I guess it’s like meditation with brushstrokes, especially when I’m wrestling with a sunset masterpiece!

SKETCHING
I’m like a deer in the headlights without a reference! But give me something to gaze at, and voila, I can whip up a decent doodle….not really, it takes time…depends on what it is. It totally reminds me of my bible journaling days, which I seriously need to dive back into.

GAMES
Diving into card games—oh, how I love to host and play. I’m especially smitten with Nertz and Kings Corner. We throw epic Nertz nights, and I’d play Kings Corner with the memory care residents. Those folks are card sharks! It’s amazing how these games spark joy and memories for them, doing something so familiar and cherished.
Pickle Ball is another fun time. I don’t even know the rules of the game but hitting the ball to getting the ball is a good workout. It Corn Hole is pretty fun, too, though I don’t know how to score that or anything. Oh and I like the old fashioned Tug-O-War is fun, too. It probably helps that I am competitive.

YARDWORK
This has become an interesting passion for me over the years. It provides hours of immersion in nature.I love the scent of the outdoors! I find I like things that most people don’t care for: raking, planting, weeding, trimming. It is where I feel I can spend time in prayer as well. However, on the zero turn, look away! I look like I’m driving drunk. Each task feels like a mini-victory of patience especially with the weeds because it seems never ending but it is worth it.

What are your go to activities?

Blessings,
Jennifer
